I've spent countless hours and days with young women with eating disorders, talking in depth about the character of Sophie. Sophie is anorexic, and everything that happens is because of that. Our psychological thriller has its creepy roots in her eating disorder.
So I want to make sure that she is portrayed truthfully. That we dig deeper than fashion magazines and skinny models to understand the reality of her world and her condition. Her eating disorder stems from things in her life that many teenagers can relate to, and it affects everything about her, even when we can't necessarily see it. And anorexia is such a vile killer of young women, it needs to be tackled properly. Every time I sit down with one of these women and girls, I'm reminded of how lucky I am to be able to tap into an insider's knowledge, and insights into what makes Sophie tick. They share generously with me as I tweak the script. The result is a character you can believe in, a psychological thriller that rings true, and ultimately, a film that's going to kick your ass.
